Background: Understanding trends in maternal age across different delivery methods is crucial for improving obstetric care planning. This study evaluated maternal age patterns and their distribution by delivery method-elective Caesarean section (CS), emergency CS, and spontaneous vaginal delivery (SVD)-at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria, over eight years.
Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted using labour ward and theatre records from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2023. Data extracted included maternal age, date of delivery, and mode of delivery. Deliveries were grouped by month and year, and categorized by delivery type. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze trends, with mean, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum age values computed. Comparative age analysis across delivery types was performed.
Results: A total of 9,912 deliveries were recorded: 4,145 (41.8%) via CS and 5,767 through SVD. Elective CS had a mean maternal age of 26.94 years (SD: 2.11), with ages ranging from 23 to 32 years. Emergency CS patients had a mean age of 23.06 years (SD: 0.93), while SVD patients were youngest, with a mean of 21.81 years. Maternal age for elective CS rose steadily from 2019-2023. Emergency CS and SVD showed wider and more consistent age variability, including teenage and older mothers. A rising trend of older women opting for elective CS was noted.
Conclusion: Distinct age patterns exist across delivery methods. An upward trend in maternal age, particularly for elective CS, suggests evolving obstetric needs. Tailored interventions are needed to address the risks associated with advancing maternal age and delivery preferences.
